Arsenal 3 - 0 Wigan (Carling Cup 4th Round)
Jay Simpson(2)
Carlos Vela

Well, what can i say. A magnificent performance from our young guns. We beat a full strength Wigan team last night. Do i need to say full strength minus Heskey like everyone else is? Nah, because to me, that was an advantage! Every single player wearing red and white wanted the ball, wanted to attack. We passed it around with such creativity and freedom, whoever Arsene fields, we can always expect that style of football.

Amazingly, last night the ‘youth’ team showed what their older counterparts haven’t in the first 12 games of the season, physicality. We faced a very tough side in Wigan last night with players such as Boyce, Zaki and Bramble. Our players dealt with it amazingly well, we were never afraid to go all the way in a challenge, we loved going to ground to win the ball back and stuck a foot in wherever possible, we also seen players like Ramsey/Wilshere/Gibbs going shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Zaki and Boyce, and often coming out better off. They were all terriers on the pitch.

With an average age of 19, and an oldest player of 23 in the polish keeper Fabianski, we were very inexperienced but none-the-less, Wigan got showed a footballing lesson. Our boys became men, our boys showed a strong and experienced Wigan side how to play football. For me that is amazing.

Also, we seen an appearence from Martin Keown, sat with the first team players onlooking the match. I don’t know what he was doing there, maybe he was just there for the night out, but considering all the gossip at the moment, it wouldn’t surprise me if there is a deal materialising.

So the goals then. The first arrived just before the interval, with a superb ball through the middle of the park that no-one could of read from Mr Wilshere, Jay Simpson latched on to it and first touch, poked it past Kirkland and into the net with his right foot, calmly under pressure. Jay Simpson got his first goal for the Gunners senior team, starting for the first time.

The second was largely down to that mexican wonder boy, Vela. A ball over the top seen Vela charge on to it, cleverly take it round the last man, and in a one on one situation, switched the ball over to the right hand side of the onion bag, where Jay Simpson only had to beat the man on the line, which he did perfectly. Unselfish play from Vela, a good teamwork goal.

Arsenals third goal was somewhat of a stunner. Carlos Vela had an amazing first touch to take it past the defender and from 16 yards, lobbed Kirkland which could only be described by Alan Parry as “Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.” The ball dinked into the net superbly, it looked like a work of art.

There were other huge talking points in the match, like Fabianski’s amazing double save that made the impossible, possible. I’ll let the video do the talking.

Enjoy Arsenal Vs Wigan.

L Fabianski – Good performance from the polish keeper, he will soon be knocking on Almunias door for that prized number one. He made a magnificent save towards the end of the game to keep his clean sheet, a shot came in which he spilled, and then another powerful one from Zaki close range, which he managed to jump back up and bounce it off the underside of the cross-bar for it to be cleared.

G Hoyte – Alot like his older brother, got forward alot and when he did he looked the part.

A Song – You know what to expect from this guy, he is creeping ever so close to that first team spot.

J Djourou – Expect to see a lot of the 21 year old, he is one for the first team.

K Gibbs – Looked shakey at left-back due to playing most of his career in left-midfield, but he looks very similar to a young uncorrupted Cashley. A real asset going forward.

J Wilshere – Man of the match, this kid is top notch, at just 16, i reckon he would walk into any of the bottom 16 clubs of the top flight. I expect him to be a full England international by 20. Mad for winning the ball back. Very determined. He also set up the first goal, with a peach of a pass.

M Randall – For me, he had a quiet game, but was a good performance when he was on the ball

A Ramsey – Reminds me alot of Cesc, his mind is already at 30, he plays like he has been in the top flight for 10 years. Very comfortable on the ball, likes to win the ball back and makes killer passes, potentially world class for me.

F Mérida – Didn’t see alot of him, but what i did see i liked.

J Simpson – This guy was on loan at Millwall last season, was voted Player of the season by his fans, and he was Players player of this season for his league, and there was alot of evidence for this last night.

Carlos Vela – Remember the name gooners. Expect massive things from this guy, he is still only young, but what a player he is, i am sure he will be starting to appear alot more for the first team. Take a look at Arsenal Vs Sheffield United in the last round of this competition.

So guys, Quarter finals here we come!

Till next time, enjoy.
